October Treats: Trick Or Treat

I’ve decided to try to get as many horror films watched this October as i can. To coincide with this, i will try to give a full review to any horror films i watch that i would like to recommend. The first movie i will cover for my October Treats series(i wanted to name it something halloween related and that was the best i could come up with) is Trick or Treat . Also, any movies i recommend as part of this series is available for streaming on netflix.

Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband.

I’m going to admit i came into this movie with rather low expectations, but it actually managed to impress me. The number one thing people want from a horror movie is scares, and while i don’t see it giving anyone nightmares it did have some good moments, and toss’s in a few twists along the way. It also uses the atmosphere of Halloween quite well imo.

Also, instead of trying to juggle all four stories at once, it lets each story play out interrupted. Instead it combines use of rashomon(showing the same thing from different perspectives) and little cross-story references to connect them all together(We see most of the characters in more than 1 story) It also has a mystery that doesn’t get solved until the last story.

My favorite story out of the anthology is the one involving the college virgin. I don’t want to spoil anything, but out of the 4 stories it had the best ending. It combined horror and sexuality in a way i really liked, and it also had the most unexpected ending out of the 4 stories.

So overall, while it won’t be redefining the horror genre anytime soon, its a perfectly acceptable halloween tribute.

Edit- I’ve decided to group all my horror posts for this month into one category. For anyone who wants to read some more horror related posts just click on the “October Horror” category πŸ™‚

Have you seen SLEEPAWAY CAMP? Now that I highly recommend. It probably has the best ending of any horror movie ever. I’m considering renting that one for Halloween. And I have a few other favourites such as EVIL DEAD, AUDITION, THE RING (both original and remake), THE SHINING, THE HOUR OF THE WOLF, and that’s about all I can think of.

    • I will have to see if i can find Sleepaway camp and The Hour of the Wolf. The Ring i saw a while ago, so i may give that a rewatch. I’ not sure if i ever saw the original.one tho. Saw the Shining and loved. Audition is another one i saw a while ago, although i do remember finding it disturbing.
