October Treats: Altered

Continuing my October Treats series, i will now recommend Altered. Like with last time, this one is also available for streaming on netflix. The basic plot summary is this

Fifteen years ago, a group of men’s lives were forever changed by a strange occurrence. Now, the same group of men will spend a night together … in terror.

This one maintains a great atmosphere of paranoia and tension, primarily by careful use of shadow. There were plenty of moments where i was wondering what was going to happen next. The gore effects in the movie are also well done, and always come of unsettling and effective when used. The movie also uses music to enhance the mood without it becoming overbearing or distracting. Overall the movie does a lot with what is presumably a low budget.

The characters in this movie are well written. While at first they may appear to be cliche “rednecks” by the end they all become real, human characters thanks to a strong script and good acting. The movie also manages to get in some genuinely funny moments without breaking the tone of the movie.

Overall, i loved this movie. After picking a couple of decent but not amazing ones that all seemed to get 5 stars on netflix, this one managed to stand out of the pack for me. While i wouldn’t give this move 5 stars, this is my favorite horror film out of all the ones i’ve seen since starting this series, and got closest to what i would consider 5 star worthy.

Have never heard of this one, but you’ve certainly caught my attention. I saw a film called THE DESCENT recently, is it anything like that?

I swear I was just looking at this on Netflix, but I totally forget anything I read about it. I think I put it in my queue. If not, I shall do so.

The poster on the IMDb page is quite disturbing. Interesting premise though, I can see how if handled well this could be a good movie. So the actors are all unknown then? Sometimes that can be pretty effective.

  4. Always fun when you find that one film that begins as questionable but ends up as a great pick! Sounds like this was one of those for you.
